In The Passion of the Christ, James Caviezel, who portrayed Jesus Christ, recently opened up about a painful accident that actually made it into the film’s final cut.

During an exclusive interview with Fox News host Raymond Arroyo, Caviezel recalled how an intense moment while filming the scene of Jesus carrying the cross through Jerusalem left him badly injured.

The actor explained that while he was walking with the heavy wooden cross on his back, he fell — and the massive prop came crashing down on him.

“As I went down, the cross actually struck my head and buried my face in the sand,” Caviezel said. “I bit through my tongue. In the footage, you can see blood coming from my lip — that’s real blood.”

Even as his shoulder throbbed in pain, Caviezel continued the scene opposite Maia Morgenstern, who played Mary, Jesus’ mother. “At that moment, my shoulder was dislocated,” he explained. “I was doing everything I could just to get my arm over the cross. It looks like I’m embracing it with love — and it turned out to be a powerful image of faith. But in reality,” he laughed, “it hurt like hell. My AC joint had been torn.”

The moment, though agonizing, ended up creating one of the film’s most moving visuals — a raw, unplanned portrayal of suffering and devotion that mirrored the story it sought to tell. As Caviezel put it, “Playing Jesus came with its own share of pain — but maybe that was fitting.”
