      LUTH’s First Bone Marrow Transplant Brings New Hope for Sickle Cell Patients

      In a landmark achievement for Nigeria’s healthcare system, the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) has successfully completed its first-ever bone marrow transplant. This medical breakthrough offers new hope to Nigerians suffering from Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), particularly as the country bears the highest burden of this condition globally.

      In late August 2024, the first patients were admitted for treatment, which involved blood transfusions, chemotherapy, and preparation for bone marrow stem cell infusion. The procedure took place in mid-September, and both patients are now under post-transplant care. This success is a major milestone for the hospital and for SCD patients, who previously had limited options within Nigeria.

      Why is This Significant?
      Nigeria accounts for one-third of the global SCD burden, with around 150,000 children born with the disease each year. Until now, patients often had to seek expensive medical care abroad. LUTH’s achievement means that life-saving treatment can now be provided locally, reducing the need for families to spend huge amounts on foreign medical procedures.

      What is Sickle Cell Disease?
      SCD is a hereditary blood disorder caused by abnormal hemoglobin. Instead of being round and flexible, red blood cells become sickle-shaped, blocking blood flow and causing severe pain, organ damage, and other complications. Though treatments like blood transfusions can manage symptoms, the only known cure is a bone marrow transplant, which replaces defective cells with healthy ones.

      While complex and expensive, bone marrow transplants have shown remarkable success in curing SCD worldwide. LUTH’s new program, developed in collaboration with the Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria (SCFN), aims to make this life-saving procedure accessible to more Nigerians.
