A native doctor, Ismail Usman, in Kuchibuyi Village, Kubwa, Abuja, has been hospitalized after accidentally shooting himself while testing a self-made ‘bulletproof’ charm. The incident, which occurred on Friday, was confirmed by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command on Saturday.
Usman, who attempted to prove the efficacy of the charm by shooting himself in the stomach with a shotgun, sustained severe injuries when the charm failed. Following the incident, officers from the Byazhin Division responded swiftly to a distress call made by one Shandam Michael. The police found Usman in critical condition and rushed him to the Kubwa General Hospital for emergency treatment before transferring him to the Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital for further medical care.
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, stated that a search of Usman’s residence uncovered the homemade gun used in the experiment and several charms. She added that the herbalist would face legal consequences, including charges for unlawful possession of firearms and attempted suicide, as stipulated under Section 231 of the Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria.
“In the aftermath of this alarming incident, police investigations are ongoing,” Adeh explained. “The reckless actions of Usman not only endangered his life but also highlighted the risks associated with such dangerous practices.”
Authorities have emphasized the need for public awareness regarding the dangers of using charms and unconventional methods to test supernatural claims. Meanwhile, Usman remains in critical care as the investigation continues.
