Lekki’s Only Female Councillor Dies Just Two Weeks After Assuming Office

Oluwakemi Rufai, the councillor representing Ward C1 in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State, has died just two weeks after being sworn into office.

Rufai reportedly passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, August 13, 2025, following a brief illness. She was the sole female member of the newly inaugurated Ibeju-Lekki legislative council.

Confirming the news in separate statements, Ibeju-Lekki LGA Chairman, Sesan Olowa, and Lekki LCDA Chairman, Rasaki Kasali, described her death as a “rude shock” to the council and the community.

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rufai’s political party, also expressed deep sorrow. In a statement issued by party spokesperson Seye Oladejo, the APC praised Rufai as a “rising star” who represented commitment, grassroots service, and gender inclusion.

“We are heartbroken by this loss and extend our deepest condolences to her family, the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, her constituents in Ward C1, and all who had the privilege of working with her. Her legacy of service, courage, and vision will not be forgotten. The Lagos APC stands in solidarity with the community she served and remains committed to the values she believed in,” the statement read.
Her sudden passing leaves a void in local governance and a community mourning the loss of one of its most promising voices.
