Deadline: November 14, 2025The World Bank’s Gender Innovation Lab (GIL) within the Africa Gender Impact Evaluation Unit, under the Africa Region Chief Economist’s Office, is seeking an ET Consultant (Economist).
The GIL conducts rigorous impact evaluations of development interventions across Sub-Saharan Africa, focusing on closing gender gaps in productivity, assets, and economic empowerment. By generating evidence-based research, GIL supports the design and adoption of effective, scalable policies that advance gender equality and inclusive growth.
About the Gender Innovation Lab (GIL)
GIL operates across more than 20 Sub-Saharan African countries, conducting over 80 ongoing impact evaluations, including 10 in Nigeria. Its goal is to produce actionable research that informs governments, development partners, and private sector leaders about what works to reduce gender inequality.In Nigeria, the Nigeria Gender Innovation Lab (NiGIL) focuses on three key pillars:
Conducting diagnostic studies on gender gaps and women’s economic empowerment.
Generating evidence on what works to enhance women’s productivity and agency.
Supporting the integration of evidence-based insights into policies and programs.
Since its establishment in 2019, NiGIL has achieved major milestones, including the launch of a gender
diagnostic report, new impact evaluations, and strong partnerships with government and non-governmental organizations.Job Responsibilities
The selected Economist will work closely with the Senior Economist and Head of Nigeria GIL to design, implement, and evaluate development projects that promote women’s empowerment. Key responsibilities include:Leading the design and execution of impact evaluations and analytical projects.
Collaborating with government and World Bank teams to develop scalable interventions for women’s economic empowerment.
Conducting baseline and follow-up surveys, data analysis, and report writing.
Managing research teams, budgets, and project timelines.
Organizing training sessions and workshops for partners and stakeholders.
Engaging policymakers to promote the use of research evidence in shaping gender-focused policies.
Coordinating dissemination of findings through reports, briefs, presentations, and media.
Supporting the expansion of partnerships between GIL, government bodies, NGOs, and academic institutions.
Preparing talking points, memos, and communication materials for senior officials.
Traveling as needed to support NiGIL activities across Nigeria.
Qualifications and Requirements
Minimum of a Master’s degree (PhD preferred) in Economics, Development Studies, or Public Policy.At least 5 years of relevant experience in applied research, gender studies, and impact evaluation.
Strong analytical and quantitative background, including expertise in econometrics and data modeling.
Proven experience managing research projects and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
Excellent communication, writing, and presentation skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet tight deadlines, and work independently.
Demonstrated experience working with government agencies, NGOs, or development partners.
Prior experience in Sub-Saharan Africa is an advantage; a background in gender-related work is a plus.
Strong interpersonal skills, strategic thinking, and cultural sensitivity.
Excellent command of spoken and written English.
