Lagos State Ends Mass Promotion of Students, Warns Teachers Against Extortion
The Lagos State government has officially announced the end of mass student promotions, emphasizing that only students who meet academic standards will advance to the next class.
Jamie Alli-Balogun, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, issued this directive on Monday while monitoring school resumption activities. He strongly warned teachers against engaging in unethical practices, such as extorting money from students in exchange for grades, stating that such actions would lead to immediate dismissal.
“Let this serve as a warning to anyone selling grades—teachers caught engaging in this will be removed from their positions,” Mr. Alli-Balogun said.
He urged teachers to align with the government’s efforts to improve the quality of education and ensure that students perform better in critical examinations.
Prioritizing Education Standards
Mr. Alli-Balogun highlighted the importance of maintaining high academic standards, noting that the government’s substantial investment in education must yield tangible results.
“Regular assessments, such as weekly tests, are crucial. Teachers must also provide additional support to students who are struggling academically,” he emphasized.
The commissioner encouraged teachers to begin the term with renewed dedication and assured them of regular school inspections to assess their performance through students’ academic results.
Expanding Technical Education
In addition to addressing classroom standards, Mr. Alli-Balogun revealed plans to expand the number of technical colleges in the state to meet growing demand. He noted that existing technical schools are already oversubscribed, and more institutions are needed to accommodate students.
He also advised educators and other stakeholders to take advantage of the Lagos State Health Scheme to ensure their well-being.
The commissioner visited several schools, including Agidingbi Junior and Senior Grammar Schools and Government Technical College, Agidingbi, as part of his monitoring activities.
