Lagos Is About To Feel Like Formula 1 On Water

I don’t know about you, but as someone who follows Formula 1 and MotoGP religiously, I’ve always wished Lagos had something close to that level of adrenaline. Well, it’s finally happening — not on land, but on water.

This weekend, Lagos will host the E1 Lagos Grand Prix, the first-ever electric powerboat race in Africa. Picture it: sleek, futuristic boats racing at insane speeds across the lagoon. No roaring engines, no fuel smoke, just pure electric speed.

It runs from October 4–5 with practice, qualifying, and the main race. The fan zone is set up at Ozumba Mbadiwe (by Oriental Hotel), and the best part? It’s free if you register.

I’m excited for a couple of reasons:

1. This isn’t just racing — it’s Lagos finally using its waterways in a modern way.
2. Global icons like Tom Brady, LeBron James, Didier Drogba, and Nadal are backing teams. That alone puts Lagos in the spotlight.
3. It’s something fresh. We’ve had concerts, festivals, and even street races here and there, but nothing like this.
4. Honestly, I think this is bigger than just a sporting event. It feels like a statement: Lagos is ready to show the world it can do more with its culture, its water, and its ambition.
