A member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Lagos Island, Adio Shamusideen, popularly known as Shemeloon, has been arrested for the alleged killing of a Lagos resident, Rahmon Imam, and for assaulting a dispatch rider.

The deceased’s uncle, Agboola Odunfa, alleged in a statement that Mr. Shamusideen brutally attacked his 38-year-old nephew along Tapa Street, off Sura Bus Stop, after Imam intervened during an extortion incident.

“One thug, agbero Adio Shamusideen, nicknamed Shemeloon, stopped a Keke Marwa operator and was beating him to extort money. A passenger, Rahmon Imam, intervened to pacify him. Rather than let go, he pounced on Rahmon, beat him into a coma, and he was hospitalised. He died three weeks later, on September 17,” Mr. Odunfa stated.
Mr. Odunfa further alleged that the same NURTW member also beat up a dispatch rider, who reportedly fell into a coma and later died on September 18, 2025.

The case was reported at the Central Police Station, leading to Shamusideen’s arrest on Thursday.

Confirming the incident, police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi told Peoples Gazette that the suspect had been taken into custody and the matter transferred to the homicide section of the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

“The case at hand is about one Shemeloon who beat somebody, and later the person died. The case was officially reported today and immediately transferred to the State CID for investigation, with homicide. I can’t say much more about a case that is still under investigation,” Ms. Adebisi said.
