Jos Businessman Jailed 30 Months for N240,000 Fraud

A Magistrates’ Court in Jos has sentenced a 49-year-old businessman, Abubakar Adams, to 30 months in prison for defrauding a woman of N240,000.

Magistrate Shawomi Bokkos delivered the judgment on Monday after Adams pleaded guilty to the charge. He was, however, given the option of paying a N50,000 fine in lieu of jail time.

In addition, the court ordered him to compensate the complainant with N240,000.

According to the prosecutor, Ibrahim Gokwat, the case was reported on February 20 by Maryann Ogbue at the Area Command Police Station.

Gokwat told the court that Adams had received N240,000 from Ms. Ogbue under the agreement that he would purchase grains on her behalf. However, after the money was transferred, he allegedly switched off his phone and went into hiding.

The convict later confessed to diverting the funds for personal use, the prosecutor added.
