IGP Egbetokun Warns Against Misusing Police for Civil Disputes

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has cautioned Nigerians against involving the police in civil disputes, particularly in land ownership matters.

In a statement on Tuesday, Mr. Egbetokun emphasized that police officers have no jurisdiction over civil cases unless there is a criminal element involved. Even in such situations, investigations must be supervised by the state police commissioner, who will be held accountable for the process and outcome.

The IGP also condemned the unethical practice of transferring ongoing cases without authorization, warning that such actions undermine investigations and erode public trust in the police force. He stated that transparency, professionalism, and accountability must guide police operations nationwide.

“All supervising officers and investigative personnel must handle cases with diligence and integrity. Any officer found engaging in unauthorized case transfers or abusing their office will face strict disciplinary measures,” he warned.

Mr. Egbetokun further criticized the growing trend of petitioning the police with frivolous or malicious complaints intended to harass or intimidate others. To curb this, all petitions submitted to the police must now include a sworn declaration confirming their authenticity and confirming that the complaint has not been filed with another law enforcement agency unless previously withdrawn.

He added that petitioners found guilty of providing false information to the police would face appropriate sanctions.

The IGP urged Nigerians to submit complaints directly to the appropriate police commands, divisions, or units rather than escalating issues to his office unless a review, appeal, or special intervention is required.

Finally, he warned against misrepresenting civil matters as criminal cases to manipulate police intervention, stating that such actions would not be tolerated.
