From my experience and that of friends who went through both systems, I’d say studying in a polytechnic and studying in a university in Nigeria isn’t all that different in practice. In both places, you’ll find lecturers who can be very vindictive, under-equipped, or simply not motivated. The struggle is the same when it comes to outdated facilities and the lack of proper academic support.
One noticeable difference, though, is that universities tend to be hit harder by strikes. ASUU strikes have kept many university students at home for months, sometimes even a full year, while polytechnics don’t always suffer the same level of disruption. On the flip side, polytechnics often receive less funding, which shows in their infrastructure and the general running of the school.
Admission-wise, universities are usually stricter and harder to get into, although there are some exceptions with institutions like Yabatech, Laspotech, or Ibadan Poly, which are still very competitive in their own right.
The real issue, though, is with certifications. In Nigeria, a B.Sc. from a university is generally valued more than an HND from a polytechnic, which is unfair but still the reality. That bias affects job opportunities and career growth. So while the academic grind may feel similar, the long-term value of the degree is where the biggest difference lies.
