Francis Ngannou made a powerful return to the cage just last weekend, following a devastating loss that shook his world. Six months after the tragic death of his son, Kobe, the combat sports legend admits he wasn’t sure if he’d ever step back into the ring.

In an emotional conversation with TMZ Sports, the 38-year-old former UFC champion, now a boxer and PFL fighter, opened up about his doubts and the emotional turmoil he faced leading up to his recent victory. Ngannou secured a first-round knockout against Renan Ferreira in Saudi Arabia, but the win brought him to tears as he reflected on the heartbreak of losing his little boy.

When asked about his uncertain future in fighting, Ngannou revealed, “Oh yes, there was a moment I didn’t know if I’d fight again. Everything felt so fragile.” He explained that during that painful period, his mind was overwhelmed with fear and uncertainty.

“You didn’t know if it was some genetic disease, a curse, or just bad luck that would keep happening,” Ngannou said. “So many thoughts go through your head—things you wouldn’t normally think about.”

Though the fight may have looked easy from the outside, Ngannou admitted that it was “by far the toughest” of his career—mentally and emotionally.

In deciding when to return to the sport, Ngannou realized that the pain of losing Kobe would never fully disappear. He concluded that waiting for the hurt to fade wasn’t an option.

“I didn’t feel like there would ever be a time when it would go away or be okay,” he confessed. “It’s one of those things you have to learn to live with. The pain will always be there.”

Ngannou’s triumphant return has sparked speculation about his future matchups, with names like Jon Jones, Tyson Fury, and Deontay Wilder being mentioned. In the full interview, he hints at what could be next, giving fans plenty to look forward to as he continues his journey in the world of combat sports.
