The White House announced Monday that the state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter will take place on January 9 in Washington, DC. President Joe Biden has proclaimed the day a National Day of Mourning, honoring Carter, who passed away at the age of 100 on Sunday.

“Through his compassion and moral clarity, he dedicated his life to eradicating disease, forging peace, advancing civil and human rights, promoting free and fair elections, housing the homeless, and standing up for the most vulnerable. He transformed countless lives around the world,” Biden said in tribute to Carter.

Biden, a longtime friend of the former president, is set to deliver a eulogy at the service, which will be held at the Washington National Cathedral. The occasion provides a poignant moment for Biden to honor Carter’s legacy during the twilight of his own presidency.

“President Carter demonstrated what it means to live out faith through action,” the Washington National Cathedral said in a statement. “His selflessness and humanitarian spirit continue to inspire us. His example of unwavering faith and service gives us hope and guides us toward embodying his values of goodness and commitment to others.”

This eulogy is a moment Biden has been preparing for. Last year, he shared with donors that Carter had personally asked him to deliver the speech.

Public commemorations celebrating Carter’s legacy will take place in Atlanta and Washington, DC, followed by a private burial in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, as confirmed by The Carter Center. Final arrangements for the ceremonies are still in progress.

The Department of Defense’s Joint Task Force–National Capital Region will oversee and coordinate the official proceedings.

Carter’s legacy: Carter was the oldest living former US president and the first to reach 100. He led enduring foreign policy initiatives, including a peace deal between Israel and Egypt, the normalization of relations with China, and the treaties that gave Panama control of the Panama Canal from the US.
