Fire razes shops in Lagos market, destroys goods worth millions

A fire erupted late Sunday night at Ajah Market near Alesh bus stop in Lekki, Lagos, causing massive destruction to shops and goods valued at millions of naira, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA). Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the permanent secretary of the agency, confirmed the incident in a statement provided to journalists.

According to Oke-Osanyintolu, LASEMA’s Emergency Response Team from the Lekki Base was activated following distress calls received on the 767 and 112 toll-free lines around 9:30 PM. The team arrived at the scene by 10:10 PM to find several shops and stores, filled with combustible materials, fully engulfed in flames.

“Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were recorded at the incident scene,” said Oke-Osanyintolu, emphasizing that while no lives were lost, property damage was extensive.

The LASEMA team, along with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, worked to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to adjacent buildings. Oke-Osanyintolu noted the dual challenge they faced of managing a large and hostile crowd while firefighting efforts were underway, as LASEMA and the Fire and Rescue Service were the primary responders on site.

“The fire has been successfully extinguished by the emergency responders at the incident scene and operation concluded,” he added. The exact cause of the fire remains undetermined at this time.
