Nigeria’s top athlete and world record holder, Tobi Amusan, failed to qualify for the final of the 100m hurdles event at the ongoing 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France. Following this, President Bola Tinubu’s administration expressed disappointment and concern over Team Nigeria’s inability to secure a single medal at the event, leading to calls for significant reforms in sports administration within the country.
In a statement released on his official X page on Saturday, Sports Minister John Enoh described the team’s performance as disappointing and stressed the urgent need for reforms to improve leadership in the sports sector. He stated, “Team Nigeria’s disappointing performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where the country did not secure any medals, is not just a result of our participation at the Olympics but is also a product of many other issues that need immediate attention.”
The minister emphasized that these reforms aim to strengthen the leadership and effectiveness of Nigeria’s sports federations, ensuring better performance on the global stage. He added, “As we return home, we must take all necessary measures to prevent a repeat of the Paris disaster. This may involve reviewing the processes by which leaders are elected to our sports federations.”
Enoh also pointed out that the upcoming elections for sports federations would be a crucial opportunity to ensure that only the most qualified individuals are chosen to lead these federations.
This disappointing outcome came shortly after four Nigerian athletes—Emmanuel Ojeli, Ezekiel Nathanial, Dubem Amene, and Chidi Okezie—were disqualified from participating in the final of the men’s 4x400m relay due to an alleged rule violation.
