The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) on 21 August 2024 played host to the Honorable Minister of Women Affairs, Barrister Uju Kennedy, who visited the institution to engage with female officers, cadets, and civilian staff. The visit marked a significant milestone in the efforts to empower and support women in the armed forces.

During his address, the Commandant of the NDA highlighted the substantial progress made in the training and integration of women in the armed forces. “The training of female personnel in the armed forces has come a long way,” the Commandant stated, emphasizing the Academy’s commitment to gender equality and inclusivity. The Commandant also underscored the importance of creating an enabling environment that fosters the growth and development of women in the military.

In response, the Honorable Minister praised the NDA’s efforts and expressed her ministry’s eagerness to collaborate with the institution. “The Ministry of Women Affairs is committed to working hand-in-hand with the NDA to further empower and support women in the armed forces,” she declared. The Minister emphasized the need for a collective approach to address the challenges faced by women in the military and to leverage their skills and talents for the benefit of the nation.

The visit underscores the growing importance placed on gender mainstreaming in the military, as the NDA and the Ministry of Women Affairs forge a strategic partnership to advance this critical agenda. The collaboration aims to promote gender equality, enhance the participation of women in the armed forces, and support their career advancement.

The Minister was accompanied during the visit by Directors from the Ministry of Women Affairs. The event was attended by Principal Staff Officers of the NDA, members of the NDA Officers’ Wives Association (NDAOWA), female officers, staff, and cadets.

Highlights of the visit included an inspection of the quarter guard, a tour of Navy Simulation Centre, Land Forces Simulation Centre and other facilities. The minister also withnessed a combat swimming display before signing of the visitors’ book, after a lunch hosted in her honor at the officers Mess.

This strategic partnership between the NDA and the Ministry of Women Affairs marks a significant step towards empowering women in the armed forces and promoting gender equality in the military.
