What is Stress?
According to merriam Webster dictionary stress is a force exerted when one body or body parts presses on, pulls on, pushes against, or tends to compress or twist another body or body part.
Stress can be defined as a state of worry or mental tension caused by a difficult situation. Everyone experience stress due to some degree. it is important to take care of oneself during the time of stress.
7 Effects of stress on the body
Anxiety
Stress make it difficult for you to relax and this can come with anxiety and irritability. We may find it difficult to concentrate when we are stressed.
Weakened immune system
When you feel like you always catch a cold after finishing a stressful project it probably because of cortisol’s effect on your immune system.
Chronic inflammation
Too much of cortisol over a long period can cause immune system to overreact in form of inflammation
Weight gain
Cortisol can cause cravings for food rich in fat,sugar,and salt. When one is stressed you may find out that you lose appetite or eat more than usual This is because our bodies are looking for quick doses of energy.
Difficulty in sleeping
Trouble In sleeping are sign of stress when one is stressed it might lead to difficulty in sleeping
changes in your menstrual circle
For a lady stress can cause a period to be late, heavier or shorter than usual
Elevated blood pressure
Stress can cause high blood pressure but when stress become chronic it could lead to long term high blood pressure which increases your risk of heart disease
It is important to know that everyone react to stress differently. Here are some tips on how you can manage stress
Get enough rest and sleep
Sleep can help reverse the effect of stress, sleep is important for both body and mind. sleep repairs,relaxes,and rejuvenate our body.
Going to bed at the same time each night and getting up at the same time each morning can improve your sleeping habit
Making your sleeping area as quiet and relaxing as possible
Limiting your use of electronic gadgets such as TV’s, computers,smart phones before sleeping
Avoid large meals and eating late before bedtime
Other ways that can help in managing your stress are;
Keeping a daily schedule can help in using time efficiently and feel more in control
Trying to eat balanced diet and to eat at regular intervals and drinking enough water,eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables if you can.
Happily, there is mounting evidence that our moods and happiness can be modified by some simple activities and interventions that reshape our thoughts and mood each day.
