The Chinese government has inaugurated a cultural exchange facility, Window to China, at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), marking a significant boost in academic and cultural collaboration between China and Nigeria.
The centre was officially opened by Yan Yuqing, the Chinese Consul-General in Lagos, during a ceremony held on campus. According to a statement released by UNIPORT’s spokesman, Sammy Kpenu, the initiative aims to foster mutual understanding through education, cultural exchange, and innovation.
“The Window to China Centre will provide students, researchers, and faculty with opportunities to engage in education, technology, language, and innovation,” Ms Yuqing said.
She emphasized that the facility is not just a physical structure but a platform for deeper intellectual dialogue and international cooperation.

The newly established centre will host:

Collaborative events focused on innovation and technology
These activities are designed to strengthen educational ties and expose Nigerian students to Chinese language, history, and innovations.

UNIPORT’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for its continued interest in educational development in Nigeria and across Africa.
“This Window to China Centre represents a timely and forward-thinking approach to deepening our partnership,” he stated.
He further noted that China’s rising global influence makes the partnership particularly strategic for Nigerian institutions aiming to broaden their global academic reach.
The centre is expected to serve as a hub for academic and cultural enrichment, enhancing not only bilateral relations but also the international outlook of the university’s academic community.
