ChatGPT’s Mobile App Hits $2 Billion in Consumer Spending — 30x More Than Rivals

ChatGPT’s mobile app is in a league of its own when it comes to monetization.

Since its launch in May 2023, the iOS and Android versions of ChatGPT have generated a staggering $2 billion in global consumer spending, according to a new report from app intelligence firm Appfigures. That’s roughly 30 times the combined lifetime revenue of competitors such as Claude, Copilot, and Grok on mobile.

      Explosive Growth in 2025
The app’s momentum is only accelerating. In the first seven months of 2025 alone, ChatGPT pulled in $1.35 billion — a 673% jump from the $174 million earned over the same period in 2024.

This year, monthly consumer spending on the app is averaging $193 million, up from just $25 million last year. That puts it 53 times ahead of its closest competitor, xAI’s Grok, which has made only $25.6 million so far in 2025, averaging $3.6 million per month — just 1.9% of ChatGPT’s mobile revenue.

      How ChatGPT Stays Ahead
While mobile revenue doesn’t tell the whole story — AI companies also make money from web subscriptions and API usage — it’s a clear sign of ChatGPT’s dominance with consumers on app stores.

Grok’s slower start partly explains the gap. Launched in November 2023 without stand-alone mobile apps, Grok was initially available only through the X platform. Its iOS app arrived in January 2025, followed by a Google Play release in March.

      Revenue Per Download
ChatGPT also leads in monetization efficiency. Appfigures data shows its lifetime global spending per download at $2.91, beating Claude’s $2.55, Grok’s $0.75, and Copilot’s $0.28.

In the U.S., that figure jumps to $10 per download, with the market contributing 38% of ChatGPT’s lifetime mobile revenue. Germany comes in second at 5.3%.

      Massive Download Numbers
Since launch, ChatGPT has been installed about 690 million times worldwide, compared to Grok’s 39.5 million. Average monthly global downloads now stand at 45 million — up 180% from last year’s 16 million average.

So far in 2025, ChatGPT has racked up 318 million installs, nearly triple the 113 million it saw in the same period of 2024. By downloads, India leads with 13.7% of lifetime installs, followed by the U.S. at 10.3%.
