OpenAI on Thursday unveiled a group chat feature for ChatGPT, now being tested in select regions, including Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan. The new feature allows users to collaborate directly within the app.
The pilot is available to Free, Plus, and Team users on both mobile and web platforms. OpenAI says the trial is meant to explore how people interact in group conversations inside ChatGPT.
The announcement follows earlier reports that OpenAI had been experimenting with a direct-message-style tool. The company describes this pilot as a “small first step” toward creating a more shared experience within the app. Early testers will be invited to provide feedback to help guide how the feature expands to additional regions and offerings.
According to OpenAI, private chats and personal ChatGPT memory remain fully private. Group chats are invitation-only, and participants can leave anytime. Most members can remove others, though the group’s creator can only exit voluntarily. Users under 18 benefit from content filtering, parental controls, and extra safeguards.
Starting a group chat is simple. Tap the people icon and add participants directly or by sharing a link. Groups can include 1–20 people. Adding someone to an existing chat creates a new group, leaving the original conversation intact. Each group has a short profile, and all chats are organized in a labeled sidebar for easy access.
Group chats operate like standard ChatGPT conversations but allow multiple users to participate. GPT‑5.1 Auto handles responses and comes equipped with search, image generation, file uploads, and dictation. Usage limits only apply when ChatGPT responds—human-to-human messages don’t count.
ChatGPT has also learned new social skills for group chats. It knows when to chime in or stay quiet, can be tagged to respond, and can react with emojis or generate profile-based images for the conversation.
This update is the latest step in OpenAI’s gradual transformation of ChatGPT from a solo AI assistant into something more like a social platform. In late September, the company launched Sora 2, a standalone social app with a TikTok-style feed for AI-generated videos, algorithmic recommendations, parental controls, and direct messaging.
