Hold onto your headsets, gamers—Call of Duty is storming the silver screen! Yesterday, Paramount and Activision dropped a bombshell, unveiling a partnership to craft and roll out a live-action blockbuster based on the iconic military shooter franchise, which has racked up an eye-popping 500 million copies sold since its 2003 debut. This is big news, and it’s only the start of Paramount’s bold new era!

This move comes hot on the heels of Paramount’s mega-merger with Skydance last month, sparking a wave of exciting deals. Think a four-year creative alliance with Stranger Things masterminds Matt and Ross Duffer, plus a jaw-dropping seven-year, $1.1 billion-per-year grab of UFC rights in the US.

Now, with 23 main COD titles under its belt, Paramount is betting big that this franchise will keep the video game-to-movie gold rush alive. Just look at the numbers: Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie smashed $1 billion worldwide in 2023, while Warner Bros.’

A Minecraft Movie hauled in $957.7 million earlier this year. And let’s not forget—Paramount’s own Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy has already zoomed past $1 billion globally!

The trend’s unstoppable, with Hollywood buzzing about upcoming adaptations like Death Stranding, Elden Ring, Street Fighter, and a Resident Evil reboot at various studios. (Oddly, the IP for the quirky Eggman Game from I Think You Should Leave remains unclaimed—someone get on that!) COD fans, though, might feel a twinge of déjà vu.

Back in 2015, Activision launched a studio to build a “robust cinematic universe” for the franchise, only for those dreams to fizzle out. Could this be the real deal this time?

Stick with us for more updates as this blockbuster saga unfolds—Paramount’s aiming to make COD a household name beyond the console! What do you think—ready for a COD movie marathon? Drop your hype in the comments!
