Bumble has launched an optional ID verification feature, allowing users to confirm their identity via government-issued ID cards. This move is part of a broader effort to ensure users are genuine and comes at a time when other social networks are grappling with age verification.
The new feature will add a special badge to the profiles of users who’ve confirmed their identity, making it easier for others to identify verified matches. Currently available in 11 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, the feature aims to reduce instances of catfishing and enhance overall safety on the platform.While verification is not mandatory, users who choose to verify their identity will be distinguishable from those who don’t. Bumble has long displayed users’ current locations on their profiles, allowing matches to verify their whereabouts. The ID verification feature takes this a step further, providing an additional layer of security.
In addition to ID verification, Bumble is introducing a feature called Share My Date, which enables users to share details of their plans with trusted friends and family. This feature is designed to provide users with an added sense of security when meeting matches in person.
The introduction of ID verification and other safety features is a direct response to a recent survey, which found that 3 in 4 daters believe feeling secure is crucial when choosing a dating app. Bumble is also introducing a Discover page, which showcases users’ most compatible matches based on dating intentions, shared interests, and communities.
According to Liesel Sharabi, an associate professor at the University of Arizona who closely follows the online dating world, Bumble’s ID verification feature could encourage hesitant individuals to try online dating. “Safety is often a big concern in online dating, and ID verification will let people feel more confident that the people they’re talking to are real,” she said.
