Mojisola Meranda has stepped down as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, citing the need to prevent further conflicts within the legislative body.
Her resignation on Monday followed the successive resignations of several principal officers of the House, who were immediately replaced.
Announcing her decision, Meranda stated, “I hereby give you notice of my decision to resign as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. This was not an easy decision, but after careful consideration of the complex circumstances surrounding my election on January 13, 2025, I have chosen this course to preserve the integrity of the House.”
Meranda Returns as Deputy Speaker
In a surprising turn of events, shortly after stepping down, Meranda was re-elected as the Deputy Speaker, the position she previously held before her brief tenure as Speaker.
Obasa Reinstated as Speaker
Meanwhile, Mudashiru Obasa, who was removed as Speaker on January 13 while he was out of the country, was re-elected unopposed. His return marks a shift in the power dynamics of the House, which had been in turmoil since his removal.
