Several branches of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have begun suspending academic activities due to delays in the payment of June 2025 salaries.
Earlier, ASUU’s National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, warned the Federal Government that the union would enforce a “no pay, no work” policy if June salaries were not paid on time. As of now, lecturers in many universities across the country remain unpaid.
The University of Jos ASUU branch has officially halted lectures and meetings. Its chairman, Dr. Jurbe Molwus, confirmed that the decision follows a directive from the National Executive Council, which permits branches to withdraw services if salaries are not paid by the third day of a new month. He added that the branch’s strike monitoring team is now active to ensure full compliance.
At Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in Bauchi, ASUU members have also stayed away from campus. Branch chairman Dr. Angulu Haruna described the government’s delay as intentional and discriminatory.
“Other government institutions are being paid, while universities are sidelined. When we ask why, they cite migration from IPPIS. But it’s clear we’re being treated differently,” Haruna said.
Similarly, in University of Abuja, most lecturers reportedly avoided campus activities due to unpaid wages.
A staff member at Ahmadu Bello University, speaking anonymously, confirmed that many colleagues have chosen to observe the NEC’s resolution and will not resume duties until salaries are paid.
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has also issued a warning, threatening strike action if their members’ salaries are not released soon.
