The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU), Bauchi State, has commenced an indefinite strike, citing unmet demands for improved conditions of service from the university administration and the state government.
Chairman of the ASUU SAZU chapter, Comrade Awwal Hussain Nuhu, made the announcement on Friday, November 29, 2024, following an emergency congress held at the university’s Yuli campus.
Reasons Behind the Strike
According to Nuhu, the union has exhausted all avenues to resolve its grievances through dialogue, but neither the university administration nor the government demonstrated a willingness to address their concerns.
“The congress observed the lack of readiness and commitment of the university’s administration and the government to attend to its demands despite several efforts put in. Therefore, a motion was moved and seconded for the branch to embark on a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike action,” Nuhu explained.
Resolution and Directives
The congress unanimously passed the resolution, with the strike officially commencing at 12:00 p.m. on Friday. Nuhu further clarified the terms of the strike, stating that:
- All academic activities, including teaching, marking, meetings, and accreditation, are suspended indefinitely.
- No academic-related meetings or engagements will take place while the strike lasts.
- All members of the union are expected to fully comply with the directive.
“This strike action will remain in effect until further notice,” Nuhu declared.
Background
This development comes after prolonged efforts by ASUU to engage the authorities for improved working conditions and welfare for academic staff. The union expressed frustration over the lack of tangible outcomes despite repeated negotiations and appeals.
The indefinite strike at SAZU mirrors broader challenges faced by academic staff across Nigeria, as the education sector continues to grapple with issues of funding, infrastructure, and staff welfare.
Students at SAZU are now left in uncertainty as the strike disrupts the academic calendar and other related activities. Both the university administration and the state government are yet to respond to the union’s decision.
For now, the ASUU strike remains in full effect, with no clear timeline for resolution.
