It seems that GTBank’s official website, gtbank.com, has been compromised. As of August 14, the site became inaccessible, and no hacker group has claimed responsibility yet.
This incident comes just a day after the domain name was renewed for another five years, from August 13, 2024, to March 21, 2029. Despite this renewal, the website is down, and checks on various platforms confirm the issue.
What’s concerning is that the attackers might have created a fake version of the site to trick customers into providing their sensitive information. This could lead to serious security risks, especially if the bank’s login details were compromised. A cybersecurity expert suggested that this could be the case, rather than the domain being stolen for resale.
Many GTBank customers are already feeling the impact, as they’ve taken to social media platform X to express their frustration about not being able to access the website for transactions. Some of the bank’s representatives have responded, urging patience and directing customers to alternative channels.
Interestingly, the bank’s mobile apps on Android and iOS seem unaffected and are still operational.
GTBank is a major player in Nigeria’s banking sector, serving millions of customers across Nigeria and other parts of Africa. This incident could have significant implications if not resolved quickly.
