Apple is planning to use a 1.2 trillion-parameter AI model developed by Google to support a major overhaul of its Siri voice assistant, according to Bloomberg News.
After reviewing the technology, the two companies are reportedly finalizing a deal under which Apple would pay roughly $1 billion per year for access to Google’s AI systems. The move will allow Apple to leverage Google’s Gemini model as a temporary solution until its own AI infrastructure is ready. The Gemini model’s 1.2 trillion parameters — a measure of AI complexity — would vastly exceed the capabilities of Apple’s current systems.
Historically, Siri has lagged behind competitors like Alexa and Google Assistant, particularly when it comes to handling complex, multi-step requests or integrating with third-party apps.
Neither Google nor Apple immediately responded to requests for comment from Reuters.
Bloomberg notes that this deal is separate from earlier discussions about integrating Gemini directly into Siri as a chatbot. The partnership will not include Google AI search in Apple’s operating systems.
Earlier this year, Apple said improvements to Siri’s AI would be delayed until 2026, without providing a reason for the setback. Meanwhile, rivals have accelerated their AI efforts: Google added Gemini to its Assistant last year, and Amazon launched an AI-driven overhaul of Alexa earlier this year.
Apple has also shaken up its executive ranks to accelerate AI development. Mike Rockwell has taken over leadership of Siri, following CEO Tim Cook’s loss of confidence in AI head John Giannandrea’s execution on product development, Bloomberg reported in March.
