The defection of two Osun State senators, elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has triggered renewed speculation and anxiety about a potential defection by Governor Ademola Adeleke.
Senators Francis Fadahunsi (Osun East) and Olubiyi Fadeyi (Osun Central) resigned from the PDP in separate letters dated June 21, citing irreconcilable differences within the party as their reasons for leaving.
The news of their defection has heightened concerns among supporters of both the PDP and APC, particularly among loyalists of APC governorship aspirants in Osun State, as the 2026 gubernatorial election approaches.
Meanwhile, some supporters of APC governorship aspirants have voiced opposition to the possibility of Governor Adeleke joining the party, arguing that his entry could hinder their preferred candidates from securing the party’s ticket.
Former Deputy Governor of Osun State and APC chieftain, Senator Iyiola Omisore, criticized the governor for allegedly attempting to join the APC through unofficial channels. Omisore stated: “The governor should talk to party leaders in the state rather than going to some governor colleagues to smuggle him into the APC. If the state chairman is not aware of his coming, the national chairman is not aware, then we party members are not sure he is coming to join us.”
In contrast, Oladele Oyelude, Coordinator of Tinubu-Shettima Ambassadors, expressed a more welcoming stance, suggesting that Adeleke’s defection could strengthen the APC. He remarked: “It would be wrong for leaders of the party, especially appointees of the President, to be seen to be trying to antagonize Governor Adeleke’s effort to join the APC. For now, he is still popular among the people, and that is a big plus for the President and the party. I think we should let him move into the party, and then we can negotiate other interests.”
Additionally, a court ruling has removed a monarch appointed by Governor Adeleke, further intensifying political tensions in Osun State.
