The Propaganda govt is at it again.
On August 7, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) claimed that UK High Commissioner Richard Montgomery had stated that 430,000 visa applications by Nigerians had been successful. However, the British High Commission in Nigeria has debunked this claim.
NiDCOM had circulated a press release stating, “Dr. Montgomery equally informed that about 430,000 visa applications by Nigerians were successful this year while advising visa applicants to apply by themselves and be cautious of agents.” This information was shared across social media platforms, tagging the UK High Commission in Nigeria, presidential spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale, and various media outlets.
However, on August 9, the UK High Commission corrected NiDCOM’s statement via a tweet, clarifying that only 255,000 visas of all types were issued to Nigerians in the 12 months from April 2023 to March 2024. The tweet read, “CORRECTION: @UKinNigeria issued 255,000 of all types of UK visas in the 12 months from April 2023-March 2024.”
In response to this correction, NiDCOM Chairperson Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa acknowledged the error in a tweet on Saturday, stating, “Very well noted. Error in figures corrected.” However, the original press release containing the incorrect information has not been removed, and no updated press release with the correct figures has been published at the time of this report.
