A court has ordered EKSU to reinstate a lecturer who was fired over an alleged sex scandal.
An industrial court in Akure, the state capital of Ekiti, has ordered the reinstatement of Dr. Ololade Aduwo, a lecturer at the university who was fired in 2019 for alleged sexual misconduct involving a female student, Rachel Olatosin.
On June 29, 2019, a video was leaked on the internet in which a female student and several of her friends stormed the lecturer’s apartment about 9 p.m. and molested him on the grounds that he intended to have an affair with Olatosin. Once the video went viral on social media, the university’s Governing Council formed an investigation committee to look into Aduwo and later fired him.
However, in his defense, Aduwo portrayed the incident as a set-up by some people out to damage his career, telling the court that he was not given a fair hearing before the investigating committee and all of the defendants’ committees and that the committees also did not follow due process.
“An order directing the defendants to print an advertorial of apology to the claimant in at least three national newspapers in Nigeria,” he asked.
In his judgment, Justice Kiyersohok Damulak of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria declared that the dismissal of the claimant (Aduwo) from his appointment with the defendants (EKSU) by the letter dated 5th December 2019 is wrongful, null, and void and ordered the reinstatement of the lecturer to his employment with full entitlements, including the payment of his salaries and allowances from the date of dismissal to today, 8th February 2023. It also ordered EKSU to pay N300,000 to Aduwo.
