Kidnapping gang from multiple states arrested in Kwara

After they accosted a victim in Koro village in Kwara State, the police launched an investigation, which led to their arrest.

The Kwara police command has arrested a group of alleged bandits who were known for kidnapping victims for ransom in the states of Kwara, Kogi, and Ekiti.

Police commissioner Paul Odama gave a press conference on Thursday in Ilorin and disclosed that kidnap kingpin Banbagida Baguda and two of his gang members were apprehended after police tracked them using a phone they left behind during their unsuccessful kidnapping attempt at Koro village.

On November 9, while Shina Abiodun and another person were traveling from Egbe in Kogi on a motorcycle, the bandits made an attempt to kidnap them. The police chief described how the thugs, who were around six in number, came out of the bush and started shooting at the victims in Koro village, which is close to Eruku town.

“The thugs opened fire on them, injuring them with gunshots.

They managed to flee the assault, however, and rushed to the anti-kidnapping patrol team stationed in Eruku town.

One Techno Phone was found after the team arrived on the scene.

The kingpin and two of his gang members were apprehended on December 20 in Oro-Ago, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, as a result of forensic examination of the phone by the investigators.

“The suspects admitted during questioning that they were in charge of various kidnapping operations in Ekiti, Kogi, and Kwara.

“Two guns made in the area and two phone handsets were found on them.

“One of their victims and his six-year-old son traveled from Ekiti State to identify and confirm that they were taken hostage by the suspects, held hostage for six days, and then released after paying N6 million.

The suspects also admitted to killing Insp. Segun Ayegbulu, a member of the NSCDC stationed at Ekiti Command.

He added that efforts were being made to apprehend the gang’s evading members and recover the remaining firearms they were carrying.

In the meantime, Mr. Odam reported that on December 12, a 15-year-old boy was allegedly abducted at Share Road in the Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara by a second kidnapping gang led by Garuba Abubakar and Abubakar Adam.

He claimed that thorough investigation resulted in the arrest of the two suspects, who admitted to being the recipients of the N500,000 the victim had paid.

The gang’s leader, Chairman Rabiu, who is currently at large, is said to be in possession of the group’s firearm and to always be in possession of all ransom money, as admitted by the two arrested suspects, he continued.

The police commissioner promised that all of the suspects would soon be charged and that Mr. Rabiu would be arrested.
