FG Unveils Revamp of Technical Education; The Federal Government has announced a major revamp of technical education in Nigeria. Beginning from the 2025/2026 academic year, all Federal Science and Technical Colleges (FSTCs) will transition to operate fully as Federal Technical Colleges.
Under the new structure, each college will now:
- Offer a minimum of six and a maximum of ten trade courses.
- Require students to take between nine and ten subjects, which include:
- One core trade course.
- Five or six general subjects (Mathematics, English Language, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Citizenship & Heritage Studies).
- Two other trade-related subjects.
- One elective.
26 Modernized Trade Areas
The reform streamlines and modernizes 26 trade areas to align with industry needs and global trends. These include:
- Bricklaying, Plumbing, Welding
- Automobile Mechanics, Auto-Electrical, GSM Repairs
- Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, Solar PV Installation & Maintenance, CNG Conversion
- Fashion Design & Garment Making
- Beauty Therapy & Cosmetology
- Creative Media, Digital Social Media Content Creation & Brand Management
- Computer Hardware & Electronic Systems Maintenance
- Networking & System Security
- Livestock Farming, Fish Farming
- Mechanized Agriculture
- Catering Craft Practice
- Carpentry, Tiling & Cladding, Leather Works
- Furniture Making
- Motorcycle & Tricycle Repairs
Focus of the Reforms
According to the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Alausa, the reforms were developed in consultation with education stakeholders, industry experts, and international partners, ensuring alignment with emerging trends in science, technology, and the modern workplace.
He emphasized that the initiative is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which identifies education as a key driver of economic transformation by 2030. The goal is to equip Nigerian youth with relevant skills for gainful employment and national development.
The Ministry has assured schools, parents, and students of full support for a smooth transition, including guidance on the new subject structure and trade courses.
