FG Enforces “No Work/ No Pay” Policy Amid Ongoing ASUU Strike; The Federal Ministry of Education has expressed dissatisfaction over reports of the ongoing industrial action declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) despite repeated appeals for the union to embrace constructive dialogue as the most effective and sustainable approach to resolving all pending issues in the tertiary education sector.
In accordance with the provisions of the Labour Laws of the Federation, the Federal Government has reiterated its stance on the enforcement of the “No Work, No Pay” policy for any employee who fails to perform official duties during the strike period.
All Vice-Chancellors of Federal Universities have therefore been directed to ensure strict implementation of this directive by taking the following immediate actions:
- Conduct a roll call and physical headcount of all academic staff in their respective institutions.
- Submit a comprehensive report indicating staff who are present and performing their duties, as well as those absent or participating in the strike.
- Ensure that salary payments are withheld for all staff who fail to discharge their official duties during the strike.
For clarity, academic staff who are members of the Congress of University Academics (CONUA) and the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA)—and are not participating in the strike—are exempted from this directive and shall continue to receive their salaries.
