FG Clarifies Misconceptions on Streamlined O’Level Admission Requirements. The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Federal Ministry of Education, has issued a clarification regarding the recent adjustment to the O’Level admission requirements for tertiary institutions. The Ministry emphasized that students are still required to register and sit for English Language and Mathematics in their O’Level examinations, despite the newly introduced flexible admission framework.
According to the clarification, the policy aims to promote inclusivity, fairness, and flexibility in tertiary education admissions, ensuring that qualified candidates are not denied access to higher education solely due to deficiencies in non-core subjects.
Policy Intent and Clarification
The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, explained that the reform was developed to modernize Nigeria’s admission process and align it with global best practices.
He stressed that while English Language and Mathematics remain mandatory subjects for all students, the streamlined policy allows tertiary institutions to admit students into specific programmes where credit passes in either of these subjects may not be directly relevant to the field of study.
This adjustment, the Minister noted, does not exempt any candidate from taking the two core subjects. Rather, it broadens access to higher education by removing rigid barriers that previously excluded capable students from pursuing their chosen academic disciplines.
Promoting Equity and Global Standards
The Ministry further stated that the new framework supports the Federal Government’s commitment to equitable access, inclusivity, and human capital development. By introducing a more flexible system, the policy recognizes diverse learning strengths and provides students with expanded academic pathways while maintaining the quality and integrity of education.
English Language and Mathematics remain central to Nigeria’s educational foundation as essential tools for communication, reasoning, and lifelong learning. The Ministry reiterated that all students must continue to register and sit for these subjects as part of their Senior School Certificate Examinations.

The Federal Ministry of Education reaffirmed its collaboration with examination councils, regulatory agencies, and tertiary institutions to ensure the smooth and effective implementation of the new guidelines in line with national education objectives.
It also cautioned students, parents, and the general public against misinformation, urging them to rely solely on official communication channels and verified social media pages of the Federal Ministry of Education for accurate policy updates.
