ASUU to Begin Two-Week Nationwide Warning Strike from October 13 2025; The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced plans to embark on a two-week nationwide warning strike beginning Monday, October 13, 2025, following the Federal Government’s failure to address long-standing issues affecting Nigerian universities.
The decision, contained in a memo tagged “Strike Bulletin One” and signed by ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, follows the expiration of a two-week ultimatum earlier issued to the government without any meaningful response.
ASUU Mobilizes Members for Action
According to the statement, ASUU’s grievances include:
- Non-signing and implementation of the renegotiated 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement
- Poor funding for university revitalisation
- Unpaid salary arrears and promotion delays
- Outstanding third-party deductions
Prof. Piwuna urged members to remain united and fully mobilized for the action, stressing that the strike is aimed at compelling the Federal Government to act decisively on issues that have lingered for over eight years.
Related Developments
The Federal High Court had earlier directed that both the Ministers of Labour and Education be notified of ASUU’s latest decision. However, ASUU maintains that only coordinated pressure from stakeholders will compel meaningful government intervention.
Meanwhile, the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) has also issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, citing similar grievances such as delayed salary payments, unfulfilled agreements, and pending promotion circulars.
Both unions have warned that failure by the government to address their demands could result in a prolonged industrial action across Nigerian universities.
