Program Description
The LLM/MPhil in Human Rights and Democratization in Africa is a prestigious, intensive one-year course designed for 25-30 outstanding individuals. It uniquely combines six months of academic study in Pretoria with six months at one of the partner universities across Africa.
The curriculum includes lectures from eminent human rights experts and practical training exercises. It’s the only program of its kind in Africa, aimed at producing graduates who are ready to contribute across the full spectrum of human rights work — from grassroots advocacy to international organizations such as the African Union and the United Nations.
Who Can Apply?
Law Students (LLM option)
- Must hold a degree-granting access to the legal profession (e.g., LLB or equivalent).
Non-Law Students (MPhil option)
- Must hold at least an Honours degree in a field relevant to human rights and democratization.
General Criteria
- Applicants should possess excellent academic records and demonstrate experience or interest in human rights.
- Women and members of minority groups (indigenous peoples, LGBTI persons, persons with disabilities) are especially encouraged to apply.
