Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Rhodes Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Citizenship: Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident. Applications from refugees or asylum seekers currently residing in Australia will also be considered.
  • Education: Have completed at least two years of schooling at an Australian secondary school.
  • Age: Be between 18 and 25 years old as of October 1, 2024 (born between October 2, 1999, and October 1, 2006). Exceptions exist for older candidates who completed their undergraduate degree later than usual, extending the upper age limit to 27 years (born after October 1, 1997).
  • Academic Requirements: Have completed or will complete by July 2025 an undergraduate degree with a GPA of at least 6.75/7 or equivalent.

Selection Criteria

The four criteria that governed the selection of Rhodes Scholars in 1902 are still the guiding criteria today:

  1. Literary and scholastic attainments (academic excellence).
  2. Energy to use one’s talents to the full (e.g., sports, music, debate, dance, theater, and artistic pursuits, particularly where teamwork is involved).
  3. Truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness, and fellowship.
  4. Moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one’s fellow beings.
