About the Award: The AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship (AU EGLS) promotes educational access and opportunity while enhancing international diversity. It combines academic excellence, leadership development, and global engagement, aiming to inspire positive civic and social change in underserved communities in the scholars’ home countries.

Eligibility Criteria: Preference will be given to candidates who:
- Are international students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds who have overcome challenges.
- Have a minimum 3.8 GPA or are in the top 10% of their graduating class for 9th-12th grades.
- Demonstrate commitment to leadership, volunteerism, community service, and helping people in their home country.
- Have specific test scores such as 95+ TOEFL iBT, 7.0+ IELTS, or equivalent on other standardized tests.
- Are in secondary/high school and graduating by June 2025, with specific criteria for IB and British A-Level students.

Benefits: The scholarship covers full tuition, room, and board for two international students requiring a non-immigrant visa to study in the U.S. It does not cover non-billable expenses like health insurance, books, airline tickets, taxes, and miscellaneous costs, totaling approximately $4,000 per year.
How to Apply:
- Complete and submit the Common Application or Coalition Application with all required documents per the AU international instructions checklist before December 1, 2024.
- Submit a bank letter and the AU Declaration of Finances Form (AU DFF), each confirming a minimum of US$4,000. These can be uploaded via your applicant portal or sent as PDF attachments to: admissionsdocuments@american.edu.
- Submit your official TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English, PTE, or Cambridge Assessment English Test score results before December 1, 2024. Official English proficiency score reports must be sent directly by the testing agency to American University, Undergraduate Admissions, Washington, DC.
- Students who do not submit a complete application packet with all supporting documents by the deadline will not be reviewed.
- If you are applying through a program supported by EducationUSA or if you are a past FLEX or YES high school scholarship recipient from the U.S. Department of State, provide a letter from your EducationUSA center’s adviser confirming your candidacy. This letter should be sent to levinson@american.edu as a PDF.
- If your application is unsuccessful, you may still gain admission to American University and be eligible for partial merit scholarships. However, to continue the application process, you will need to submit proof of funds totaling up to US$81,620 (estimated costs for the first year of study).
