Nigerian Universities 2026 THE Rankings; The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, has praised Nigerian universities for achieving their strongest performance yet in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, describing the achievement as evidence that the Federal Government’s education reforms are producing measurable results.
The minister made the statement through his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday.
According to Alausa, 24 Nigerian universities were ranked globally in the 2026 edition of the Times Higher Education rankings, an increase from 21 universities in previous editions. He also noted that Nigeria is now the most represented country in Sub-Saharan Africa in the global rankings.

According to him, the improved performance reflects the progress being made across the country’s universities, particularly federal institutions, as 17 of the 24 ranked universities are federal universities.

Alausa reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to implementing the Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings were released shortly after Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) emerged as Nigeria’s highest-ranked university in the 2026 Times Higher Education Sustainability Impact Rankings.
ABUAD was ranked 72nd globally, making it the only Nigerian university to secure a place among the world’s top 100 institutions in the sustainability rankings.

According to Times Higher Education, universities qualify for the overall Sustainability Impact Rankings by submitting data for Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17 – Partnerships for the Goals, along with data for at least three additional Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
SDG 17 serves as the foundation of the overall ranking methodology, while the additional SDGs provide a broader assessment of each institution’s sustainability performance.

Times Higher Education also announced that universities from the following countries appeared in the rankings for the first time:
