JAMB to Introduce Personal Computer Option for UTME from 2027; The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a major update to how the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) may be conducted from 2027. Candidates will soon have the option to sit for the exam using their personal computers under a new system known as “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD).
The announcement was made by the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ish-aq Oloyede, during the 2026 Policy Meeting on Admissions into Tertiary Institutions in Abuja.
What the New BYOD UTME Option Means
Under the proposed system, candidates may be allowed to write the UTME using their own laptops or computers instead of only relying on devices provided at accredited CBT centres.
To maintain exam security, JAMB stated that a controlled system will be used, including the insertion of a flash drive into each device during the examination.
The aim is to ensure that candidates use their devices strictly for the exam without access to external materials or malpractice tools.
Why JAMB Is Introducing the Change
According to the Registrar, the BYOD model is designed to improve the UTME experience in several ways:
It may reduce technical issues such as system failure at CBT centres
It could lower operational costs for exam administration
It aims to give candidates a more familiar and comfortable exam environment
It responds to complaints from candidates about unreliable systems during examinations
JAMB also noted that strict security measures will still be in place to protect the integrity of the exam.
Other Digital Exam Reforms Coming in 2027
The Registrar added that the BYOD initiative is part of a wider set of reforms expected to roll out by 2027.
He stated that several other improvements in the examination process are already at an advanced stage and will be introduced alongside the new system.
What Candidates Should Know
JAMB has not replaced CBT centres completely. Instead, the BYOD option is an additional method being considered.
Candidates should note the following:
The UTME remains a computer-based examination
Personal computer use is only a planned option, not yet fully implemented
Security checks and anti-malpractice systems will still apply
Final guidelines will be released before implementation in 2027
For now, candidates preparing for UTME should continue focusing on existing CBT-based preparation while staying updated on future announcements from JAMB.
