Elechi Scholarship Scheme for UNN Students (2026)

The Elechi Scholarship Scheme 2026 has been announced as a focused funding initiative for undergraduate students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). This fourth edition is described by the organisers as a pilot run of a structured, performance-tracked scholarship model, with eligibility limited strictly to UNN students.

According to the organisers, the scheme is designed to move beyond traditional scholarship formats by ensuring accountability, continuity, and sustained academic support.

What the Elechi Scholarship Aims to Address

The organisers identify several challenges commonly associated with scholarship programmes in Nigeria, including:

  • Limited access to scholarship opportunities
  • One-off lump-sum payments without long-term support
  • Little or no monitoring of how funds are used
  • Minimal funding for academic research in core sciences and arts

The 2026 cycle is positioned as a practical response to these gaps, using a controlled funding and review structure.

How the Elechi Scholarship Funding Model Works

The Elechi Scholarship follows a defined funding and monitoring framework:

  • The scheme runs on a periodic and dependable cycle
  • Tuition and accommodation fees are paid directly to the university, not to students
  • The remaining support is disbursed as monthly stipends
  • Students and referees submit performance reviews at intervals
  • Each award lasts one academic year, with renewal based on performance and funding availability
  • The long-term goal includes research-focused funding for postgraduate studies in Nigeria

The organisers describe the 2026 edition as a proof-of-concept phase for this model.
