ABSU SUG Moves to Address Lodge Rent Hike and Irregular Renewal Demands; The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, has released an official statement responding to growing concerns among students about the recent increase in lodge rents and the improper timing of rent renewal demands from landlords across host communities.
In a memorandum jointly signed by the SUG Secretary General, Comr. Ihekaibeyanma Promise Ego, and the SUG President, Comr. Ugoani Emmanuel Ugonna, the union acknowledged the rising anxiety among students caused by what it described as “unconventional and untimely methods of demanding renewals and increasing rents.”
SUG’s Intervention Efforts
The SUG assured students that it is already engaging with relevant authorities, community leaders, and lodge owners to tackle the situation. Their ongoing efforts are focused on ensuring:
- Indiscriminate rent increases are addressed and curtailed
- Student-friendly and standard procedures for lodge rent renewal are restored
- A predictable and fair system is established to prevent future disruptions

The union called on students to remain calm as productive engagement continues. Reaffirming their dedication to student welfare, the SUG stated:
