WAEC Debunks Rumour on Alleged Restriction of Students to Specific Subjects. The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially addressed recent rumours circulating in the media, which claimed that the Council had issued a directive restricting Senior Secondary School students to specific subjects for the upcoming 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates (SC).
In a statement released by its Public Affairs Department, WAEC categorically dismissed the reports as false and misleading, emphasizing that the Council has not issued any directive limiting students’ choice of subjects for the forthcoming examination.
WAEC’s Clarification
According to the statement, WAEC wishes to distance itself from the unfounded claims, stressing that there has been no restriction or alteration to the subjects that candidates are permitted to offer for WASSCE (SC) 2026.
The Council further clarified that the development and regulation of school curricula in Nigeria fall strictly under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government of Nigeria, not WAEC. The Council’s role, it explained, is to implement government-approved educational policies through examinations and assessments, not to determine or restrict curricular content.
WAEC reaffirmed that as a law-abiding and policy-driven institution, it operates strictly within the legal and operational frameworks set by its host governments across member countries. Any introduction or modification of curricula, it added, must follow due process as stipulated by the Federal Government, and not through arbitrary decisions by the Council.
Public Advisory
WAEC therefore urges schools, parents, students, and the general public to disregard the misleading reports currently circulating on social media and some online platforms. Stakeholders are advised to rely solely on official communications from WAEC for accurate and verified information regarding examination policies and guidelines for WASSCE (SC) 2026.
The Council reassured the public of its commitment to fairness, transparency, and professionalism in all its operations. It emphasized that every candidate participating in the 2026 WASSCE for School Candidates will be given an equal and fair opportunity during assessment, ensuring that no student is disadvantaged or disenfranchised.
