ASUU Suspends Two-Week Strike Gives FG One Month to Meet Demands. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced the suspension of its two-week warning strike, giving the Federal Government a one-month deadline to conclude the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and address other key issues affecting Nigeria’s public universities.
The announcement was made by ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, in Abuja, following what he described as “productive engagements” with the government and mediations by the National Assembly.
ASUU began the strike on October 13, 2025, over the government’s failure to act on longstanding issues including lecturers’ welfare and the implementation of previously renegotiated agreements.
According to Piwuna, meetings held with the government team led by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed on October 16 and 18 yielded significant progress, though some matters remain unresolved.
After reviewing the situation during its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on October 21–22, ASUU decided to suspend the strike to allow dialogue to continue — but warned that if the government fails to deliver on its commitments within a month, the union will resume strike action without further notice.
Prof. Piwuna thanked students, parents, the media, and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for their support and urged Nigerians to hold the government accountable for lasting reforms in the education sector.
