UNIABUJA Governing Council approves promotion of 104 Academic Staff to Professorial Rank; The 11th Governing Council of the University of Abuja (now Yakubu Gowon University), under the leadership of Distinguished Senator Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuoso, has approved the promotion of 104 academic staff to professorial rank.
The decision was taken at the 78th Extraordinary Meeting of Council, held on Tuesday, 9th September 2025, and Wednesday, 10th September 2025, at the University’s Main Campus.
Breakdown of the Promotions
- 58 academic staff were promoted to the rank of Professor.
- 46 academic staff were elevated to the rank of Associate Professor.
The promotions cut across various disciplines, including:
- Agriculture
- Animal Science
- Islamic Studies, Islamic History and Ethics
- Clinical Sciences, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Radiology, Ophthalmology
- Theatre Arts
- Social Science Education
- Civil, Chemical, and Electrical Engineering
- Pharmacology, Statistics, Applied Mathematics
- Nursing and Allied Health Sciences
Remarks from the Acting Vice-Chancellor
The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mathew Adamu (fcvsn), congratulated the newly promoted staff, commending their dedication to scholarship, academic excellence, and the advancement of knowledge.
He stated:

He added:
“With the stability the University currently enjoys, greater achievements lie ahead. This improved and timely reward system will strengthen our journey towards becoming a world-class institution.”
