UNILAG Commissions Smart Reading Booths at Main Library; The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has taken another major step towards creating a conducive learning environment with the commissioning of 10 units of modern, smart reading booths—known as the Explore Seat Pods—at the institution’s Main Library.
Commissioning Ceremony
The commissioning ceremony was held on Monday, August 18, 2025, and was led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, alongside other members of the University management team.
In her remarks, the Vice-Chancellor highlighted that the project reflects the University’s vision of making the library a vibrant hub for discovery, exploration, and continuous learning. She commended the University Librarian, Professor Olatokunbo Okiki, and his team for their dedication to transforming the library into a 21st-century learning facility.
Professor Ogunsola noted:
“… with the reforms and continuous upgrades, the University of Lagos Library will continuously enjoy an increasing influx of users, thereby guaranteeing optimization of facilities, encouraging intellectual collaboration, and upholding the culture of academic excellence.”
The Vision Behind the Explore Seat Pods
The University Librarian, Professor Olatokunbo Okiki, described the Explore Seat Pods as an extension of the Library Maker–Space, which was launched on November 14, 2023.
According to him, the new facility is designed to provide:
- Personalized and focused study spaces
- Opportunities for deep thinking, reading, exploration, and discovery
- A modern academic atmosphere that fosters creativity, collaboration, and innovation
Prof. Okiki emphasized that the pods aim to help students and researchers “study smarter, think deeper, and connect better.”
