Federal Colleges of Education to Offer Bachelor Degrees Under New Law; In a historic move to improve the quality of teacher training in Nigeria, the federal government has granted Federal Colleges of Education the authority to award Bachelor’s Degrees in Education, in addition to the existing Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE).
This reform follows the signing of the Federal Colleges of Education Act, 2023 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marking a major shift in teacher preparation nationwide.

A New Era for Teacher Education
Speaking in Abuja, the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, described the policy as more than a legal update—it is a strategic transformation in the way Nigeria trains its teachers.
“This is a bold step toward strengthening our education system and ensuring our teachers are fully equipped for modern classrooms,” said Dr. Alausa.
Under the new policy, Federal Colleges of Education that meet the standards of the National Universities Commission (NUC) can begin offering teaching degrees without needing partnerships with universities.
