Federal Government Dissolves UNIZIK Governing Council; The Federal Government has dissolved the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, citing significant breaches of the university’s laws and failure to comply with directives from the Federal Ministry of Education.

Reasons for the Dissolution

Illegal Appointment: The Governing Council unilaterally appointed a Vice-Chancellor who did not meet the minimum eligibility criteria.
Disruption and Tension: This action caused unrest and disharmony within the university community.
Government Action: According to the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, immediate intervention was necessary to restore stability and maintain governance standards at the university.

The Council’s actions were deemed a serious threat to the effective governance and harmony of the institution.

The Federal Government has also removed Prof. Bernard Odoh, whose appointment as Vice-Chancellor by the dissolved Governing Council was declared illegal.

The appointment did not comply with the provisions of the university’s founding act, making it invalid.
