The University of Pretoria (UP), in partnership with the MasterCard Foundation (MCF), is offering scholarships for high-achieving African students interested in pursuing postgraduate studies. These scholarships aim to support students commencing their studies in September 2024.

  • Applicants must be citizens of Sub-Saharan African countries (excluding Southern African countries).

  • The scholarship will be taken at the University of Pretoria, South Africa.

The scholarship is available for Master’s degree applicants across a variety of postgraduate study programs at the University of Pretoria.


About the Award:

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program (MCFSP) aims to empower academically talented yet economically disadvantaged young Africans. It is designed to help these scholars contribute to the transformation of their communities and the continent through leadership and service. The program offers full scholarships to selected students who have been provisionally admitted to pursue a postgraduate degree at UP.

Community service and internships are essential components of the program, ensuring that scholars are actively involved in contributing to their communities.


Scholarship Type:

  • Master’s (Taught)

Eligibility Criteria:

To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must:

  1. Citizenship: Be citizens of a Sub-Saharan African country (excluding Southern African countries).
  2. Financial Need: Demonstrate economic disadvantage and financial need.
  3. Leadership Potential: Show evidence of leadership potential through involvement in community service, school, church, or similar projects.
  4. Academic Excellence: Maintain a high academic average.
  5. First-Time Applicants: Be first-time applicants as first-year students in the relevant postgraduate degree program.

Selection Criteria:

  • Selection is based on academic achievement and the applicant’s fit with the program’s values, including leadership, community development, and the drive to give back to Africa. Successful candidates must commit to completing their degrees in the minimum time required and returning to their home countries to make a positive impact on their communities.

Number of Awardees:

  • Several scholarships will be awarded.

Scholarship Benefits:

The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program covers the following:

  • Full tuition fees
  • Accommodation in a UP residence
  • Meals
  • Books and printed material
  • A modest monthly stipend
  • Medical aid (Ingwe only)
  • Travel costs (one return trip during the study period)
  • Visa application costs (one visa application for the study duration)

Duration of Scholarship:

  • The scholarship will cover the entire duration of the Master’s degree program.
