Eligibility Criteria for the Melbourne Human Rights Scholarship:

To be considered for this scholarship, candidates must:

  • Have applied for and meet the entry requirements for a Master or Doctorate by research degree at the University of Melbourne, or be currently enrolled in a research degree at the University of Melbourne with at least 12 months (full-time equivalent) of candidature remaining.
  • Intend to undertake graduate research in the field of human rights and demonstrate a commitment to the peaceful advancement of respect for human rights, which extends beyond academic studies (such as voluntary work or work experience).
  • Have not completed a research qualification at the same or higher level as the course for which the scholarship is sought.
  • Intend to study full-time unless there are compassionate or compelling circumstances that prevent full-time study.
  • Not have previously received a Human Rights Scholarship.

Selection Criteria:

  • Area of study in and level of commitment to human rights.
  • Academic merit.
  • Strength of supporting documentation.

Value of the Scholarship:

The following benefits apply:

  • Living allowance of $42,000 per year (pro rata) for up to 2 years for students undertaking a Master by research degree or up to 3.5 years for students undertaking a Doctoral degree. The living allowance may be indexed annually and includes limited paid sick, maternity, and parenting leave.
  • Full fee offset for up to 2 years for students undertaking a Master by Research degree or up to 4 years for students undertaking a Doctoral degree.
  • Relocation grant of $2,000 for students moving from States or Territories outside Victoria or $3,000 for students moving from outside Australia.
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Single Membership for international students who require a student visa to study in Australia.

Duration of Scholarship:

  • 2 years for students undertaking a Master by research degree.
  • Up to 3 years, with a possible 6-month extension, for students undertaking a Doctorate by research degree.
